United Europe was never a British objective. It was the objective of France under Napoleon and to a lesser extent – regrettably – also Germany in the 1990s.  Anyone with even a rudimentary grasp of history knows what enormous significance sovereignty has for the British – and will have been more surprised by Britain’s joining of the EU – than by Brexit
